SASSA STATUS check Appeal — Step-by-Step Guide (ITSAA) for 2025
If your SASSA SRD R350/R370 application shows Declined, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). This page explains the process, common decline reasons, the evidence you should prepare, and what to expect after lodging your appeal. This website is independent and not affiliated with SASSA.
When should you appeal?
- Your SRD status for a month is Declined and you believe the reason is wrong or outdated.
- Your personal or financial situation changed and is not reflected in SASSA’s checks.
- You corrected details (e.g., banking or phone) and still receive a decline for that month.
Important: You must appeal for each month that shows Declined — appeals are month-specific.
What you need before you start
- SA ID number (13 digits) and the mobile number used for your SRD application.
- Decline reason as shown on your SRD status (e.g., “Alternative Income Source Identified”).
- Supporting information or evidence (see the checklist below).
Evidence checklist (pick what applies)
- Income proof: Recent bank statements showing low/no income if you were declined for income.
- Employment status: Termination letter, UIF payout history, or affidavit if you are no longer employed.
- Education funding: Proof that NSFAS is not active (if declined for NSFAS).
- Identity verification: Correct ID details and proof if you recently corrected DHA records.
- Contact/banking updates: Screenshots or confirmations that you updated your banking or mobile number on the official portal.
How to submit an appeal (ITSAA)
Appeals for SRD are made to the Independent Tribunal, not to SASSA directly.
- Open the official ITSAA page: srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals.
- Enter your ID number and the mobile number used for SRD.
- Select the month you want to appeal.
- Choose the decline reason from the list and provide a clear explanation.
- Attach or reference your supporting evidence (where applicable).
- Submit the appeal and note the reference/confirmation details.
Tips for your explanation:
- Be short, factual, and specific (e.g., “I was retrenched in June; bank statement shows no monthly income since July”).
- Refer to documents by name/date (e.g., “Absa statement Aug–Sep 2025 attached”).
- Appeal for each declined month separately; reuse your explanation with month updates if the reason is the same.
Track appeal status & timelines
- Appeal decisions can take a few weeks. Keep your mobile number active for OTPs and updates.
- Recheck your status regularly on the official SRD portal: srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.
- If your appeal is successful, a Pay Date may appear later; SRD pays in batches, and bank reflection times vary.
Common decline reasons & how to respond
“Alternative Income Source Identified”
Detected deposits exceeded the threshold. If incorrect, show bank statements proving low/no income and explain once-off deposits (e.g., family help) that shouldn’t be treated as regular income.
“UIF Registered” / “NSFAS Registered”
Systems flagged other benefits. If benefits ended or were never received, provide proof of termination or confirmation letters and appeal for each affected month.
“Pending DHA Verification” / “Identity Verification Failed”
Confirm that your Home Affairs records are correct. If you recently fixed an ID issue, explain the correction date and re-appeal for months incorrectly declined.
“Bank Details Pending”
Approve but no pay method set. Update your banking details on the official portal, verify via OTP, then recheck your status for a pay date.
Appeal FAQs
How long do I have to appeal?
Appeal as soon as you see a decline for a month. Treat each declined month separately.
Do I need to appeal every month?
Yes. The SRD evaluation is monthly. If multiple months are declined for the same reason, you must appeal for each month.
My appeal was successful but no Pay Date yet.
SRD pays in batches. Check again after a few days and make sure your banking details are verified.
Can I change my mobile number before appealing?
Yes. Update your number on the official portal first so you receive OTPs and notifications, then submit your appeal.
Where can I get help in person?
Visit your nearest SASSA office. Use our offices directory to find addresses and phone numbers by province.
